Keeping alive Chinese traditions overseas…

In the past, overseas ethnic Chinese families would usually have the reunion dinner at home, but the preparation and cooking involved can be taxing. That's where Chinese restaurants have stepped to the fore. They have become the preferred place to hosts the family reunion dinner and other gatherings during the fifteen days celebration.

The reunion dinner on the eve of the Lunar New Year is a deeply ingrained tradition in the Chinese community, symbolising family unity, love, and the anticipation of a thriving year ahead.

In Singapore and Malaysia especially, the tradition of “lou hei” is practiced everywhere in restaurants and homes…”prosperity toss”.

“Lo hei” translates in Cantonese to ‘tossing good fortune’, so you’re expected to toss that salad as high as possible before eating it.

This cherished occasion is celebrated in many Chinese communities around the world, and for many Chinese families in Malaysia and Singapore, it is an essential moment to reconnect and bond with loved ones.

Some popular 'reunion' dishes include:

A whole fish is a must-have dish at the reunion dinner. The word for fish, "yu," sounds like "surplus" in Chinese, so it is a symbol of abundance and prosperity.

Chicken is another popular dish that is often served whole at the reunion dinner. It is a symbol of family unity and togetherness.

Pork is another popular meat dish that is often served at the reunion dinner. It is a symbol of wealth and good fortune.

Noodles are a symbol of longevity and a long life. They are often served at the reunion dinner to wish the family good health and happiness.

Dumplings are a popular dish that is often served at the reunion dinner. They are a symbol of wealth and prosperity. A must-have in China.

Spring rolls are a popular dish that is often served at the reunion dinner. They are a symbol of good luck and fortune.

Tang yuan is a type of sweet soup made with glutinous rice balls filled with black sesame paste, crushed peanuts and others. It is a symbol of family togetherness and harmony.

Happy Chinese New Year 2025.
