There was a 90-year-old lady who had no heirs, so she made a deal with a 47-year-old lawyer. The deal said that the lawyer would inherit her apartment upon her death, but in exchange, he would provide her with an allowance for the rest of her life. The old lady had incredible resilience, and the tables were completely turned against him.
Interestingly, the woman, Jeanne Louise Calment, outlived the lawyer. The lawyer's widow had to continue paying Jeanne her allowance, which ended up totaling approximately twice the value of the apartment.
Jeanne, who lived to be 117, smoked cigarettes from the age of 21 until she was 117, although she is said to have smoked only two cigarettes a day toward the end of her life. Moral of the story? Never underestimate the elderly. They have seen a lot and may well be smarter than you. And apparently, sometimes even a cigarette can't knock them down.
