Was Josef Mengele really as bad as people say he was?

It's a shame that he was quite handsome and somewhat charismatic. This makes it harder to believe that he was one of the worst sadists in history.

Here is a very common first-person account:

I was born on November 23, 1930. I had been alone in Auschwitz for about five weeks, separated from my family, my parents, two sisters and two brothers, when Dr. Mengele took me out of a line as we were leaving the camp for the gas chamber. That day I was the only one personally selected by Mengele and his assistant. They took me to his laboratory, where I met other children.

They were screaming in pain. Black and blue bodies covered in blood. I fainted in horror and terror and passed out. A bucket of cold water was thrown over me to revive me. As soon as I stood up, I was whipped with a leather whip that broke my flesh, then I was told that the whip was an example of what I would receive if I did not follow instructions and orders. I was used as a guinea pig for medical experiments. I was never given any painkillers or anesthetics. Every day I suffered excruciating pain. I was injected with drugs and chemicals. Most of the time, my body was connected to tubes that inserted drugs.

For many days I was held captive for hours. Some days they would cut my body open and leave the wounds open so they could study them. Most of the time there was nothing to eat. Every day my body would go numb with pain. There was no skin left on my body for them to give injections or cannulas. One day we woke up and the place was empty. We were left with open infected wounds and no food. We were all half dead, with no energy or life in us. [One day... Russian soldiers tried to shake me to see if I was dead or alive. They heard a small beating in my heart and quickly picked me up and took me to the hospital.
