Is Brazil a country with the smallest amount of racism? In

Profile photo for Fernando Probst

In fact all countries in the world but some Africans Countries are racists.

There are some myths or at least misunderstood issues about Brazil's racism;

  • Not having a one drop rule or even some segregation policy does not mean there is no racism.
  • Black people and non white people keeps being killed by police.
  • Non white people rest at lower levels of our society with some few exceptions. As a clearly non white person as myself (darker than a southern European, but having straight hair) born in a upper middle class (in fact a recessive dark skin gene present in my phenotype, for sadness of some relatives in a family in an accelerated process of whitening). I am accepted as being white. By the way I was white during the last 75 years (due my birth certificate). Some months ago during last census I redefined myself as “pardo”. Because I don fit the other labels available in the census survey as white, indigenous, black, asian. Pardo is a sort of non white.

Brazil was submitted to one of stronger process of whitening. It was implemented by:

  • Bringing withe immigrants and giving then support and land. As black people were abandoned. In the beginning of such process just very white people were admitted. As Germans and North Italians. German and Italian immigration has some 200 years. Just in 1904 they brought Japanese.
  • Black people were exterminated in wars. Even presently this process continues. Police keep killing blacks

So, becoming whiter in Brazil works as a sort of survival strategy.

The picture a Redenção de Cam (The redeem of Ham), give us a good idea.

A black grandmother celebrates a white grandson from a white father and her mixed daughter. She feels all suffering, humilliation of being black has an end with the white grandson.
