There’s a website “celebheights” which is dedicated entirely to determining how tall any given actor or actress is. They made a rather meticulous study of their heights. Of course, Tom Cruise has an entry. One of the most detailed ones.
Cruise isn’t an insecure man — he has consistently dated and married women considerably taller than him. In heels, most tower over him. And he doesn’t seem to mind, always sporting the same award-winning Colgate commercial smile in any photo. In movies, he sometimes has to play imposing characters and is forced by directors to wear heels to give him a little boost. In the public perception, Cruise being some sort of undercover leprechaun and hiding the fact from the world is, of course, hilarious. But just because its hilarious, that doesn’t make it true.
It still doesn’t give him the physicality to convincingly portray a character like Jack Reacher. But he doesn’t need to. He’s kind of the white Jackie Chan nowadays, doing crazy stunts by himself, getting injured, and getting on with it. There are also other celebrities on “Celebheights” discussed whose heights aren’t what it would seem — Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger notoriously lie about their heights for example, with Schwarzenegger for instance claiming to have been 6′2″ at his peak when in reality he was about 5′11″ at most.
No, Tom Cruise isn’t “really super short”. He’s just slightly below average in height. He also has a thing for tall girls and this doesn’t do him any favors, optics-wise. But I doubt the subject of his height, or lack thereof, keeps Lord Xenu’s most successful acolyte up at night.
