Potato chips were invented in 1853 by George Crum, an African-American chef

The French fries were very popular at the restaurant, but one day a customer complained that they were too thick. Crum made a thinner batch, but the customer was still not satisfied. So Crum cut the chips so thin that they could not be eaten with a fork, hoping to annoy the extremely picky customer. Unexpectedly, the customer was delighted – and potato chips were born!

Initially called "Saratoga Chips" or "potato crisps," the chips were soon packaged and sold throughout New England. Later, Crum opened his own restaurant.

In 1895, William Tappendon began manufacturing and marketing the chips in Cleveland, Ohio. In the 1920s, a salesman named Herman Lay began distributing chips in the southern United States, selling them out of the trunk of his car. In 1926, Laura Scudder, a potato chip factory owner in Monterey Park, California, invented the waxed paper bag to keep potato chips fresh and crispy. With advancing technology, innovation, and the creation of countless variations and flavors, potato chips have continued to grow in popularity over the years!
