I’ve given this a lot of thought over the last few years and I still have no clue. The problem is that Trump is so stupid everything he does can be put down to incompetence. It could even be that the Russians launched a clandestine charm offensive on Trump, and because of that Trump just feels wanted and loved by Russians. I thought Trump’s behavior might have something to do with Trump’s debt with the Russian Oligarchs, there is certainly enough circumstantial evidence to raise suspicions in that regard, but I just can’t see something like that having much hold on Trump, I don’t think he would really care that much. Then there’s the pee tapes, and if real they would certainly be embarrassing for Trump, but again I just can’t see them giving much of a hold on him. In the end I have tended towards incompetence and stupidity just because it keeps things simple, and didn’t require deep dark conspiracies.
But ever since the Helsinki meeting and Trump’s bizarre behavior while in the presence of Putin, I have became convinced that there's definitely something beyond simple stupidity going on. But there are problems when you start thinking about Trump being blackmailed by anyone. Again Trump’s stupidity comes into play, as well as his ability to rewrite reality, I just can’t imagine fear having much of a hold on Trump, he is the sort of person an extortionist would have to periodically beat up every few months just to remind them the threats are real. Or of course there is also the possibility that whatever Putin has on Trump is so horrific not even Trump is able to ignore it.
Whatever the Truth, Trump certainly acts like he is working for Russian, and not US interests, and it is entirely possible that the reality might be far worse than previously thought, as more of Trump’s actions come to light.
