The best solution, but for the moment it is utopian, would be for Vladimir Putin to leave the Kremlin and be replaced by a reformist and liberal politician.
This is obviously utopian, because Putin has annihilated all opposition for two decades. He holds the country with an iron fist, and it is hard to see who could take his place. However, nature abhors a vacuum.
The Russian people continue to massively support Putin who has succeeded in locking up information to make people believe that the West wanted to destroy Russia and that Putin was simply protecting the people from annihilation. This is the idea he uses to justify his odious war in Ukraine...
The Russian people are suffering the consequences of Putin's war, and accept it for the moment.
But until when? The people will not be able to endure this indefinitely without saying anything. By wanting to suffocate Russia economically, the West is betting that the people will eventually revolt. It is a difficult bet to win, because we have seen in other countries that this situation does not always work.
It could still end up forcing Putin to scale down his plans for Ukraine.
However, I do not see Ukraine accepting a compromise that would make it lose the Donbass, for example. The Ukrainians legitimately want their territorial integrity back. That is why I see this war lasting for a long time.
Moreover, I don't see any possible solution as long as Putin is in power, because Putin has shown that his word cannot be trusted. In fact, even if a peace treaty was signed, there would be a strong risk that if the sanctions were lifted, he would take advantage of a respite to rebuild the strength of his army before one day soon attacking Ukraine again.
