Why is Türkiye protesting and why is President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan arresting the opposition leader?

Because President Erdogan just shamelessly arrested the leader of the Turkish opposition, the popular mayor of Istanbul. He also forced the head of the university that issued his opponents’ degree to revoke said degree for bogus reasons — when the university director refused to do so, he stepped down and his replacement (an Erdogan appointee) agreed…

The situation is all the more ridiculous because Erdogan’s forceful revoking of his opponents degree makes the man unable to run for office — when Erdogan’s own degree was supposedly from a university that didn’t exist until a year after he suposedly gained his degree. The hypocrisy has not gone unnoticed and huge crowds took to the streets in Turkey to protest these actions. For two days now, there have een massive protests going on in Turkey, a country where even “liking” a post mocking the president and his allies can get you in legal trouble.

Internal polling for Erdogan is rather dramatic — he’s done shady things but never quite this blatant before. He really is worried he may be removed from office if elections were to take place right now. For the record, it should be noted that Erdogan has been in charge of Turkey since 2003. Take note, America, this is what happens when a president and his ruling party stack the courts with loyalists.
