What is your opinion of the Philippines' #BringHimBack movement, which supports Rodrigo Duterte?

It’s wishful thinking. No amount of public pressure can force the ICC to return a man it just arrested a day ago for crimes against humanity — murder, rape, torture, unlawful killing, the list of charges against Rodrigo Duterte is endless.

And while the ICC claims to only have evidence to tie him to 43 killings directly, there’s at least 27,000 people who died in Duterte’s anti-drug war.

He’s boasted frequently of killing people himself. Of joining the police death squads back when he was mayor of Davao. And of having killed his first man when he was still a teenager himself.

Some men thrive on violence. Get off on it, even. Rodrigo Duterte is such a man. I say, if you live by the sword, you should have the bravery to die by the sword, too. Now Duterte cries he wants to face justice but “only in his own courts, in his own country”… nice try, old man. In “your” own courts, in “your” own country, where you have a rabid following ranking in the millions, surely you feel safe. But in the cold sterile court rooms of The Hague, you won’t stand a chance. You won’t be able to bribe these people or fake a medical emergency. Or get out on bail and hop a plane out the country. That’s why he’s scared…

#BringHimBack, really? Save your hashtags. The world doesn’t revolve around wishful thinking. You can’t wish back Duterte with a catchy viral online slogan anymore than a conservative mother can “pray away the gay” of her child. Rodrigo Duterte made his bed, and now he must lie in it.
