This 98-year-old woman walked 10 km with a cane and a stick, to reach the Ukrainian-controlled territory from the settlement of Ocheretyne in Donetsk region, captured by Russia last week. Because she didn’t want to live under the Russian occupiers. (Video in the comments below.)
“I survived the other war. And I’m now surviving this war,” says Lidia.
“I am now left with nothing. That war wasn’t like this one. I’ve seen that war as well. Back then, not a single house was burned.
“And now, houses are burning. And the trees are pulled out from the ground, with their roots.”
Lidia had to stop and rest as she was trying to cross the grey zone and into the Ukrainian-controlled territory.
“I was tired. I lay down in the grass, fell asleep. Took a bit of rest. And then I got up and walked again.”
She was walking all day, without food and water. She used a piece of wooden plank as a stick, as well as using her cane, as she walked.
The police rang the woman’s family and her granddaughter will be picking her up.
This amazing woman symbolizes everything about Ukraine's resilience, spirit and bravery.
At 98 years old, Lidia is an inspiration to freedom.
