Why do we hear more about ligers than tigons?

I hesitate to answer questions such as this so I will give the sermon first and then answer the question.

Ligers are created from a male lion mating with a female tiger and you get the following:

Tigons are created by mating a male tiger with a female lion:

Both of these hybrids are created by man. The males are sterile. This would not happen in the wild. The breeding of these animals makes absolutely no contribution to conservation of either species and as a practice it should be banned worldwide.

OK - sermon over.

You hear more about ligers as ligers can grow to huge sizes and some specimens have scaled at over 1000lbs. They are bred as curiosities - no other reason. Tigons do not grow anything like as big and so are seen much less but males are also sterile.

There is really no value in creating these animals and is down to irresponsible breeding by irresponsible people whom I have nothing but contempt for. Ligers are especially susceptible to arthritis and will be in pain for much of their later years as their legs struggle with their weight.

I do wish people would cease breeding them. Some have tried using white tigers in an attempt to make white ligers though pure white ligers have not been created yet.
