Why are Europeans not as fat as Americans are when Europeans eat white bread and pasta and butter all the time?

I’ve traveled all over Europe. Visited nearly every European country. Many several times.

Here are my observations. And things Americans could do to be thinner like the Europeans.

First, Europeans generally eat small meals.

Breakfast may be include an egg, yogurt, berries and bread.

Lunch is often a small salad with a little fish or chicken.

Dinner is light as well with a salad, some vegies and a little meat, chicken or fish.

Dessert is often a piece of dark chocolate or some fruit and cheese.

Second, they walk a lot.

Most of the streets in the cities are narrow and crowded. So most of the large cities have excellent underground transportation which is far quicker and more convenient.

Few people drive cars. Most take public transportation. And they walk to get to the transportation hub and from it to their destination. Then reverse it on the way home.

Just in the course of everyday life most people walk several miles every day.

Compare that to America.

Supersized meals. Loaded with fat, sugar and refined carbs. Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

And little to no exercise. Most people, outside of the major downtowns, drive a car. Park next to the entrance where they are going. Sit at a desk all day.

Then drive home. Walk in from the driveway. Plop down on the sofa to watch TV. Maybe open a tall cool one.

And wonder, “Why can’t I lose weight?”

Edit 1: Some commenters have stated there are overweight Europeans and thin in shape Americans. Of course there are. The question was asked as a generalization and I answered it that way. Having said, that my experience in traveling all over Europe is that Europeans in general eat lighter meals and walk or cycle a lot more than Americans.
