Look at this picture of these children and see if you can identify where they are from.
I will not be surprised if you say India. If you are an Indian, you might also think that these are from some ‘temporary slums’ often located outskirts of cities. I do not blame you.
To the surprise of many, These are Roma kids of Romania and this picture was taken in Romania, Europe.
Who are Roma people of Europe and why they look Indian?
DNA and linguistic evidence suggests that they originated from north India’s gypsy community with an Indo Aryan decent. In India, people often call them Jhuggi or basti people. Some call them Banjaras or Cobra gypsies from the famous documentary. I am not completely sure if people from Kalbeliya tribe in India are actually ancestors of Roma people who did not migrate.
Ancestors of Roma people moved to Europe around 12th century from India. These days they are completely Europeans. Their Romani language is very similar to that of Hindi and Persian. Here is an example:-

Edit:- Following picture is for the people who argue that they do not look Indian or they are mixed and their Indian characteristics are wiped out. Of course after 500–700 years, they intermixed with local population but it is not applicable on all of them. Also, It does not matter if they intermixed or not, the whole point of this is that a current European community has an Indian ancestry.
